Character Information
Name: Bayek of Siwa
Canon: Assassin’s Creed: Origins
Canon Point:After end of the game and The Hidden Ones DLC.
Age: late 40s
History:
As described here https://assassinscreed.fandom.com/wiki/Bayek
Personality:
Bayek is a friendly and kind man with a strong sense of justice. The plight of the people matters a lot to him, and while he generally does abide by the laws, he is much more interested in upholding the type of justice found in religion rather than human law (which he does find flawed). That allows him to rebel against the Ptolemy rule because while often they are coming from the rule of law, they are unjust and unfair to the people. It is important to say here that his function as Medjay is likened to something between a police force and a priest. If the laws in place hurt people, they are not good laws and are not enforced by good people. Through the game we mostly see him helping Egyptian people, he is also willing to help Romans/Greek that he finds noble and not hurting anyone, wanting to just live their lives in the best way he can. He’s also very religious so while he would not remember his devout worship and respect towards Egyptian gods this inclination would most definitely transfer to his own god/goddess.
As said Bayek would never hesitate to help those in need. He strongly believes friends and family to be most important to one’s life and really loves children very often going to great lengths to make them smile. He maintains old friendships (and makes new ones!) even while living through the tragedy of losing his son and subsequent revenge quest. That puts him in interesting contrast with his wife Aya. Ultimately, they’re both driven by revenge, lost in grief and traumatized by the loss of their beloved child. But while Bayek would see people personally responsible for it punished (killed) but sees the end of this quest and hopes that once they are dead, they can come back to their life as a pair of last Medjay… Aya doesn’t hold such a hopeful outlook. She’s determined to not just kill the people personally responsible but to dismantle the whole system that they are part of. To topple the rulers, to play the game of thrones on international theatre. There is no “coming back to old life” for her.
While Bayek cares a lot for people he meets and hopes to see the end of his quest, where his son’s soul is put to rest we do get glimpses that his nobility doesn’t stop him from harbouring darker, very vengeful urges. Most of the time when he assassinates someone from the conspiracy responsible for his family tragedy, we see a mythologised version of their last conversation and Bayek putting the soul of person he killed to rest with ancient ritual. However sometimes, just sometimes, he fights someone so abhorrent, so cruel, that he refuses to put their soul to rest and allows them to wander the afterlife in torment. Which shows his cold and ruthless side especially to those he considers his enemies. He shows no mercy to those who prey on the weak and is capable of holding a grudge for centuries.
Sometimes Bayek also shows another flaw of his. That he is too trusting especially when he cares so much about people involved. The first sign we see of it, is when he befriends steward dedicated to rebuilding the city of Letopolis. Bayek helps him and the local populace and unknowingly walks into a trap- for this man, of pure reputation, with a loving family in his house and helping people in rebuilding a place for themselves, turns out to be no one else, but The Scarab himself. One of the people that caused Bayek’s son death. And not just that, because The Scarab betrays Bayek, and leaves him on the desert, buried in the sand, to die.
This flaw also shows in much personal and painful way, because Bayek ultimately failed to understand the person he loved the most, his wife. He blinded himself with hope, that once their quest is done, they will return to life and will rebuild it anew. Not noticing both torment and ambition that tortured Aya, for there was no return for her. People that hurt families like hers are out there, it’s not just those who personally hurt them- there is more of them, at every level of the hierarchy and she dedicated herself to wiping them out. All of them. No matter the cost. No matter how. No need for friends, no need for love. There was only that determination to break the system and bring everyone down (with her). In the end, Bayek and Aya separated, being unable to reconcile between his hope and her rage.
Abilities:
Bayek is last of the Medjay and as such is trained in fighting, hunting and basic desert survival. He can ride horses and camels. He knows how to operate small ships. As for fighting, he uses a wide array of ancient weapons. He has knowledge of preparing simple bombs and poisons for poison darts. Also: cat magnet, the felines swarm to him.
Strengths:
Friendly, kind, just, compassionate, determined
Weaknesses:
Ruthless, stubborn, vengeful, violent, too trusting with people he cares about (can’t find a single word for this trait)
God/Shinki: Shinki
Why?: He serves to protect the people. He would be quite lost as a god.
Cause Of Death: Killed by a member of Order of the Ancients.
Vessel: A Bonnelli's Eagle.
Name Location: On his chest, right over the heart.
Power: Full Synchronisation
Bayek can transfer all his abilities gradually over time to his god/goddess in a process similar to Bleeding Effect (https://assassinscreed.fandom.com/wiki/Bleeding_Effect). The more often Bayek is in his vessel form the more of his abilities transfer and the better his god/goddess is in using them. He or she will gain his agility in scaling buildings, mountains and other seemingly impossible places, as well as combat skill using varied ancient weaponry from clubs to swords, bows and maces. The progress will be indicated by henna markings appearing on the god's body similar to those that Egyptian dancers and singers used to wear. Starting with the Eye of Horus around the right eye indicating acquiring Eagle Vision ability (https://assassinscreed.fandom.com/wiki/Eagle_Vision).
This is a sort of sixth sense that allows Bayek's god to see through his eyes while he’s in vessel form and instinctively sense how people and objects relate to him, which manifests as a coloured glow, much like an aura.
Red indicates enemies or spilt blood, blue indicates allies, white indicates sources of information or hiding spots, and gold indicates targets or objects of interest. This ability grows stronger with training to the point it can allow its user to determine if the person they are speaking with tells the truth or is lying, see images that aren't even there (like hidden pictures or messages available only to those that possess this sense), as well as footprints or sounds.
The advanced version that Bayek possessed in life gave him the ability to telepathically see and hear through the senses of animals, especially his eagle Senu with whom he had a special connection. He can pass this ability to his god but it would require even more training.
The most advanced version of Eagle Vision, Eagle Sense, allows its user to focus on a target and predict where he would go or what would he do, as well as pick up cold trails or locate disguised and hidden targets. The predictions would manifest as semi-transparent spectral images of the target performing the tasks in question.
The henna markings will start simple and get more sophisticated as the Synchronisation progresses.
